Introduction
Write the following on the board. If students need help getting started, you might suggest that they draw a picture.
Headline Story
Mary Kate has a certain amount of money in her backpack and one-fourth as much in her pocket. How much money does she have in all? What can you say about the amount of money in her backpack?
Possible student responses
- If Mary Kate has $4 in her backpack, she has $1 in her pocket and $5 in all.
- She could have $2 in her backpack and 50¢ in her pocket for a total of $2.50.
- She couldn’t have 75¢ in her backpack because you can’t have one-fourth of that amount of money.
- The amount of money in her backpack has to be divisible by 4.
- You could make a table of possible amounts.
