Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to think of imaginative ways to draw conclusions about the relay race.
Headline Story
The Field Day relay race required team members to take turns filling 8-ounce cups with water, running to the other side of the field trying not to spill the water, and dumping the cups into 5-gallon buckets. The first team to fill its bucket to the 4-gallon mark won the race. Each team had 10 students.
Possible student responses
- If each student on a team made one trip to the bucket and didn’t spill any water, the team would have 80 ounces of water in the bucket, which is 10 cups, 5 pints, 2.5 quarts, or just over half a gallon of water.
- Therefore, each team member will likely need to make at least 8 trips to the bucket.
