Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to use logical reasoning to draw conclusions about the number of marbles in the jar.
Headline Story
June guessed there were about 200 marbles in a jar. When she started counting, she counted 70 marbles and saw that the jar was almost half empty.
Possible student responses
- There were fewer than 200 marbles in the jar.
- There were probably about 150 marbles in the jar because half of 150 is 75, and 70 marbles was a little less than half.
- 200 is a reasonable estimate of the number of marbles in the jar.
