Introduction
Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to think of creative ways for Jana to find the weight of her suitcase.
Headline Story
Jana is going on a trip and she is allowed only 30 pounds of luggage on the airplane. She wants to figure out the weight of her suitcase to make sure it isn’t too heavy. The problem is that her suitcase doesn’t fit on her scale.
Possible student responses
- Jana can weigh herself and then weigh herself holding the suitcase, then find the difference to determine the weight of the suitcase.
- If Jana weighs 118 pounds with the suitcase and 90 pounds without it, then the suitcase weighs 118 – 90 = 28 pounds.
- If Jana and the suitcase weigh 136 pounds, then the suitcase weighs 46 pounds, 16 pounds too heavy to go on the plane.
