Grade 1

Read the Headline Story to the class. Sometimes it helps children to review what they *do* know and what they *do not* know from the story. In this problem, they *do* know that there are 4 balls in a box and that some of them are red and the rest are green. They *do not* know how many there are of each color. What’s possible? What’s impossible? Encourage children to think of creative ways to complete the story. All possible answers could be arranged in a chart; there are 5 possibilities.

There are 4 balls in a box. Each ball is either red or green.

- There could be 4 red balls and 0 green balls.
- There could be 3 red balls and 1 green ball.

- There could be 0 red balls and 4 green balls.
