Introduction
The goal of Headline Stories is for children to learn to translate situations and information into problems that can be answered mathematically. Display the Headline Story pictured in the sidebar to the class. To help children get started you might ask, “Do you see a pattern?” or “How would the pattern continue?”
Possible student responses
- 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10
- 1 + 1 = 2
- 2 + 1 = 3
- 3 + 1 = 4
- Each picture has one more block than the picture before it.
- On the first day I had one block. On the second day I had two blocks. On the third day I had three blocks, and on the fourth day I had four blocks. The next thing will be made with five blocks.
