Grade 1

Read the Headline Story to the class. If the children need help coming up with some of the ideas suggested in the sample responses, pose questions such as, “How many nickels and pennies could Jean have?”, “What are the most coins she can have?” or “What is the smallest number of coins she can have?”

Jean has 15¢. She only had nickels and pennies.

- She must have two nickels and 5 pennies, or 1 nickel and 10 pennies.
- The fewest coins she would have is 3.
- The most coins she could have is 15.
- If she had any pennies, she would have at least 5.
- If she had five more cents, she would have 20 cents in all.
