Introduction
Sometimes it helps children to review what they do know and what they do not know. In this problem, they do know that Ginnny’s pet snake is 3 inches longer than Kyle’s pet snake. They do not know how long either snake it. You might consider making a table to show the different possibilities.
Headline Story
Ginny’s pet snake is 3 inches longer than Kyle’s pet snake.
Possible student responses
- If Kyle’s snake is 1 foot long, Ginny’s snake is 1 foot, 3 inches long or 15 inches long.
- If Ginny’s snake is 14 inches long, Kyle’s snake is 11 inches long.
- We do not know how long Kyle’s snake is, but we can make a table to show different possibilities.
- If we know how long one of the snakes is, we can figure out how long the other snake is by either adding 3 or subtracting 3.
