If children need help coming up with some of the ideas suggested in the sample responses, pose questions such as, “How would you find the total time it takes to Mark to get to school?” or “If the bus ride takes half an hour, how long does it take Mark to get to school?” You might consider making a table to show how long it takes Mark to get to school.
Headline Story
Mark takes a bus to school. It takes him 15 minutes to walk from his house to the bus stop.
Possible student responses
- Mark’s trip to school takes however long the bus ride is, plus 15 minutes for walking.
- If the bus ride takes half an hour, then it takes Mark 45 minutes to get to school.
- If the bus ride takes 15 minutes, then it takes Mark half an hour to get to school.
- We can make a table to show how long it takes Mark to get to school.
