Introduction
Share the Headline Story with the class. To help children get started, pose questions such as, “What coins could you have?” or “What if you had a quarter and a nickel?”
Headline Story
I had some coins worth 30 cents. I gave all my money to some friends. I gave each friend the same amount.
Possible student responses
- You could give a dime to each of 3 friends. That is the only way you could have split up the money fairly if it was in dimes.
- If it was in nickels, you could give 1 nickel to each of 6 friends, 2 nickels to each of 3 friends, or 3 nickels to each of 2 friends.
- If you had a quarter and a nickel, you could not divide it up evenly at all, so that must not have been what you had.
- If you had pennies, you could give one to each of 30 friends. That is a lot of friends!
