Introduction

Share the Headline Story with the class. Encourage children to find as many patterns as possible.

Headline Story

Mark saw a pattern in these subtraction problems.

$\begin{array}{r}34 \\ -17 \\ \hline \end{array}$

$\begin{array}{r}35 \\ -18 \\ \hline \end{array}$

$\begin{array}{r}36 \\ -19 \\ \hline \end{array}$

Possible student responses

The top number and the bottom number go up by one to get the next problem.
The next problem is 37 – 20 and the difference is 17.
All the problems have 17 as a difference.
If you add the same number to both numbers in a subtraction problem, the answer stays the same.
