Introduction
The goal of a Headline Story is for children to learn to translate situations and information into problems that can be answered mathematically. What information is given? What information is missing? Encourage children to invent questions or problems that could be represented by the number sentence below.
Possible student responses
- 7 + 3 = 3 + 7
- Carmen has 7 marbles and Naomi has 3 marbles.
- You can count Carmen’s marbles first and then Naomi’s or you can count Naomi’s marbles first and then Carmen’s. You will still get the same number: 10.
