Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to use logical reasoning to draw conclusions about the line.
Headline Story
John drew the points (3,0), (5,0), and (–1, 0) on a coordinate grid. All the points lay on a line. What line was it? Can you name more points on the line?
Possible student responses
- The line was the horizontal axis (or the x-axis).
- All points on the line are represented by ordered pairs with zero as the second number.
- Some other points on the line are (–5, 0), (0, 0), and (2,0).
