Introduction
Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to think of innovative ways to solve the problem.
Headline Story
Destiny bought three shirts and three pairs of pants. How many different outfits can she make from them?
Possible student responses
- I made up colors for each item. Then I wrote down each shirt color and matched it with each pants color. Finally, I counted each combination on my list – blue shirt, black pants; green shirt, black pants; yellow shirt, black pants; blue shirt, tan pants; and so on. There were nine outfits in all.
- Another way is to show each shirt in one row and each pair of pants in another row. Then connect the pairs and count the connecting lines.
