Purpose
To identify numbers that come before or after a given number on a number line
Sketch a number line on the board with only one point, and label that point with a two-digit number, less than or equal to 30. Draw in one point on either side of the labeled point and have children call out labels for the points for the numbers that come before and after this number. (Alternatively, children can also come to the board to label the points). Repeat this activity as time allows. Keep it lively and fun!
Part 1 focuses on numbers less than or equal to 30. Part 2 moves to include all numbers up to 100, with specific focus on crossing decades. The extension repeats Part 2 but removes the support of the number line.
I’ll sketch a number line with only one point and label that point with a two-digit number. Your job is to figure out which numbers live before and after the number that I label.
Examples:
While children are enjoying their building of mastery, feel free to repeat. When children are eager for more, try Part 2.

As always, when children seem excited for a new challenge, move on.
I’ll say a number. You say which numbers live before and after the number. (You may choose to ask a child to offer a number and have other children respond. This time try to remove the support of the number line).
