Introduction

Present the Headline Story. Ask students if such fractions can even exist. If so, ask them to find some. Also ask if there are patterns or methods that can help to find more such fractions.

Headline Story

Wanted: two fractions with different denominators. Their sum must be 1.

Possible student responses

$\frac{1}{3}$ + $\frac{4}{6}$ , or $\frac{10}{12}$ + $\frac{1}{6}$ , or $\frac{2}{10}$ + $\frac{4}{5}$ .
You can find two fractions with the same denominator whose sum is 1, and change one of the fractions to an equivalent fraction with a different denominator.
