Possible student responses
- If he divided the cards into 18 piles, then he sold 6 piles.
- He must have divided the cards into a number of piles that is a multiple of 3.
- If he sold 10 piles, then he must have had 30 piles to begin with.
- No matter how many piles he made, he sold of his cards.
