Introduction
Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to use mental math to solve the problem.
Headline Story
Think of a number. Take a third of it. Now take half of that result. What do you get? What must be true of the original number if the final result is a whole number?
Possible student responses
- If you start with 6, you end with 1.
- If you start with 12, you end with 2.
- If you start with a number that is divisible by 6, you end with a whole number.
- If you start with a number that is not divisible by 6, you get a fraction one or both times you divide.
