Headline Story
Mariko finds a rectangular piece of paper. She decides to cut the paper to make another figure with the same number of parallel sides, but with fewer right angles. What can you say about the figure Mariko will make?
Possible student responses
- A rectangle has 2 pairs of parallel sides, so Mariko will make a figure with 2 pairs of parallel sides.
- The new figure will have at least 4 sides.
- A rectangle has 4 right angles, so the new figure can have 0, 1, 2, or 3 right angles.
- Mariko can make a parallelogram or a pentagon like this:
