You might use the Internet to look up average temperatures and extend this Headline Story. Students might consider the difference between the hottest and coldest temperatures on Mount Everest, for example.
Headline Story
Susan claims that the average temperature decreases by 3oF for every 2,000 feet of elevation on Mount Everest. If she were correct, what would be the temperature at 29,000 feet if the temperature at the base camp at 17,000 feet is _____oF.
Possible student responses
- If the base camp was 50oF, 29,000 feet would be 32oF.
- If the temperature at the base camp was 0oF, the temperature at 29,000 feet would be –18oF.
- There would be a difference of 18oF between base camp and 29,000 feet.
- The temperature at 21,000 feet would be 6oF less than at base camp.
