Introduction
Read the Headline Story to your students. In responding to this story, you might tell students that they can pour measured amounts of water down the drain in order to reuse a container. However, if they use a container to measure out an exact amount, they can assume it’s filled to the top without any spillage.
Headline Story
Yoshi has a gallon jug, a quart jug, and a pint jug. The gallon jug is full of water; the other two jars are empty. He wants to measure out 5 pints of water. How can he do it?
Possible student responses
- He can fill up the quart jug and the pint jug from the gallon jug; that will leave 5 pints in the gallon jig.
- Or, he can use the pint jug to take a pint at a time out of the gallon jug until the gallon jug has 5 pints left. (He’d have to take out 3 pints, because there are 8 pints in a gallon).
