Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to think of creative ways to answer the question.
Headline Story
Jessica takes the bus downtown to meet her mom. The bus stops at her apartment every 20 minutes, always on time. The bus trip takes between 15 and 20 minutes and Jessica then walks 5 to 10 minutes from the bus to her mom’s job. Today, when she arrived, it was exactly 4:00. What time could she have left her apartment today?
Possible student responses
- The longest this whole trip could take is 50 minutes.
- The shortest is 20 minutes.
- So, she could have left as early as 3:10, or as late as 3:40.
