Introduction
To extend this Headline Story, you might tell students how long it took to heat up the oven for different dishes Brett was making, and have them figure out the target temperatures.
Headline Story
Brett turned on the oven. He looked at the thermometer every 5 minutes and noticed the temperature had risen by the same amount each time. If the temperature in the oven was 75oF when he first turned it on, how long will it take to get to 450oF?
Possible student responses
- It depends how much the temperature goes up in 5 minutes.
- From 75o to 450o is a change of 375o. If it goes up 25o every 5 minutes, it will take 15 five-minute intervals, or 75 minutes.
- If it goes up 100o in 5 minutes, it will take 3 ¾ five-minute intervals, which is almost 20 minutes.
- It wouldn’t wait over an hour for an oven to warm up.
- The temperature likely increases around 100o in each 5-minute interval.
