Introduction
Encourage students to think about the minimum, maximum, range, median, and mode as they respond to this headline story.
Headline Story
Make up a list of 6 test scores for which only 2 are the same. What can you say about these data points? Change one score at a time. What happens each time you change a score?
Possible student responses
- I began with the scores 95, 96, 100, 82, 85, and 95. Then I put them in rank order and found that both the median and mode were 95.
- When I changed the 82 (the minimum) to 72, both the median and mode stayed the same.
- Next, I changed one of the 95s to 85 and the median was 90.
