Introduction
Make several possible lists of test scores with your students. As an extension, you might impose the constraint that the mean of the scores must fall below the median, or be greater than both the median and the mode.
Headline Story
Make a list of 6 spelling test scores so that there is one score that occurs 3 times. However, don’t make the mode and median equal to each other.
Possible student responses
- 85, 85, 85, 89, 95, 100. The median is 87 and the mode is 85.
- The set 80, 85, 85, 85, 89, 95 wouldn’t work because both the median and the mode are 85.
- Another possibility: 80, 85, 90, 100, 100, 100 also works because the median is 95 and the mode is 100.
