Headline Story
On a spring morning on Bird Island, Antarctica, the temperature was _____. By noon it had risen _____ degrees to _____, but it was still below zero. By 3:00 the temperature had risen _____ more degrees and finally reached 0. By 8:00 in the evening the temperature dropped _____ degrees and it was colder then than in the morning.
Possible student responses
- If it were –12 in the morning and rose 5 by noon, it would be –7 at noon.
- The temperature would need to rise 7 by 3:00 to reach 0.
- The temperature at noon and 3:00 have to be the same magnitude – the first number is negative and the second number is positive.
- By 8:00 it would have to drop at least 13 degrees to be colder than in the morning.
