Maria has 5 coins. She has enough money to buy a carton of milk that costs 64¢. What can you say about the 5 coins?
Possible student responses
- The 5 coins cannot be 5 pennies, 5 nickels, or 5 dimes.
- The coins can be 5 quarters.
- Maria can have 2 quarters, 1 dime, and 2 nickels.
- She might have 3 quarters and 2 pennies.
- She must have at least 1 quarter.
- Maria cannot have exactly 64¢.
- The least amount Maria can have is 65¢, with 1 quarter and 4 dimes.
