Introduction
This Headline Story prompts children to look for a pattern and figure out what to say based on that pattern. Read the story aloud and ask, “What can you say or ask about this story? What can you figure out or predict based on the first part of the story?” Then model a prediction based on that pattern.
Headline Story
On Sunday, my piggy bank was empty. On Monday, I put in 1 penny. On Tuesday, I put in 2 pennies. On Wednesday, I put in 3 pennies.
Possible student responses
- Each day the person puts in one more than the day before.
- There are six pennies in the bank.
- I predict that the person will put in four pennies on Thursday.
- How many pennies will be in the bank at the end of Friday?
- If the pattern continues, there will be 15 pennies by Friday.
