At first, children are likely to just fill in the blanks. You might model a more creative response for this example, such as “Brianna couldn’t give Nik more than 8 marbles.” This kind of modeling will help children learn to recognize and become more comfortable giving creative responses.

Possible student responses
- She gives 1 to Nik, and now she has 7 left.
- She gives 4 to Nik and now she has 4 left—that’s a fair share because she and Nik now have the same amount.
