Introduction
Read the Headline Story to the class. Encourage children to answer the question creatively. You can prompt them by asking someone to pick a number of cats that might be asleep.
Headline Story
There are 10 cats. Some are asleep. How many cats might be awake and how many might be asleep?
Possible student responses
- If 8 cats are awake then 2 are asleep.
- If 2 cats are awake then 8 are asleep.
- There could not be 10 cats awake since that would mean that zero, or none, would be asleep and the story says that some are asleep.
