Introduction
The goal of Headline Stories is for children to learn to translate situations and information into problems that can be answered mathematically. What information are they given? What information is missing? Encourage children to think mathematically to complete the problem.
Headline Story
At the school store, erasers cost 12¢. Lucy buys some erasers and give the cashier $1.00. How much change might she have gotten?
Possible student responses
- If Lucy buys 1 eraser, then she spends 12¢ and gets 88¢ in change.
- If she spends 24¢ on 2 erasers, then she gets 76¢ in change.
- The smallest amount of change she could receive is 4¢ if she buys 8 erasers.
- If she gets 16¢ in change, then she bought 7 erasers.
