Introduction
The goal of Headline Stories is for children to learn to translate situations and information into problems that can be answered mathematically. What information are they given? What information is missing? Encourage children to think mathematically to complete the problem.
Headline Story
Christopher had a jar of marbles. He shared them equally with 2 friends and had no marbles left.
Possible student responses
- If Christopher had 12 marbles, each one of them got 4 marbles.
- If each one of them got 2 marbles, then Christopher had 6 marbles in the beginning.
- Christopher couldn’t have had 7 marbles or 8 marbles or 13 marbles, because none of those can be shared equally among 3 people with none leftover.
