Introduction
The goal of the Headline Stories is for children to learn to translate situations and information into problems that can be answered mathematically. What information do we have? What information is missing? Is there extra information we don’t need? Encourage children to invent good questions or problems to pose.
Headline Story
I have 10 marbles. Some are green and some are yellow.
Possible student responses
- There must be at least one green marble and one yellow marble.
- You could have 7 green marbles and 3 yellow marbles, 7 + 3 = 10.
- If you lost 4 marbles, you would have 6 left.
