Introduction
Share the Headline Story with the class. Encourage children to think of creative ways to complete the story. You can extend this story by changing the number of chicks that are awake and having children complete the story again.
Headline Story
There are more than 10 chicks in the barn. Some are sleeping, but 6 are awake.
Possible student responses
- There have to be at least 5 chicks sleeping because if there were only 4 sleeping then there would be exactly 10 chicks in all.
- Maybe there are 100 chicks sleeping! If there were that may chicks in the barn they would probably have not said more than 10, they would have said more than 100, but 106 is more than 10.
