Grade 2

Share the Headline Story with the class. If your children need help coming up with ideas, you might pose additional questions. For example, you might ask “How many beans might Luis and Inez have in all?” or “Does Inez have more beans than Luis?” or “Can we find all the possibilities for the numbers of beans they have?”

Luis and Inez each have some beans. Inez gives 5 beans to Luis, and then they each have the same number of beans.

- If they both ended up with 10, then Inez had 15 to start with and Luis only had 5.
- If Inez started out with 20 lima beans, then they both ended up with 15, so Luis started with only 10.
- Does Inez always have to start with 10 more?
