Share the Headline Story with the class. Sometimes it helps children to review what they do know and what they don’t know. In this problem they do know that the person paid 2 dimes and got 2 coins back. They don’t know what coins the person actually got back or what the snack cost.
Headline Story
I paid for my snack with 2 dimes and I got 2 coins back as change. What can you can say?

- My snack cost less than 20¢.
- If I got back 2 pennies, my snack cost 18¢.
- If I got back a nickel and a penny, my snack cost 14¢.
