Share the Headline Story with the class. Some children may need help coming up with varied responses. If so, pose questions such as, “How many marbles could Chris have in all? Is the amount odd or even? How many marbles does Chris have in each pocket?”
Headline Story
Chris has some marbles in two pockets. He has the same number of marbles in each pocket.
Possible student responses
- Half of Chris’s marbles are in each pocket.
- If he has 60 marbles, then he has 30 in each pocket.
- If Chris has an odd number of marbles, he couldn’t put the same number in each pocket; he has to have an even number of marbles.
