Introduction
Share the Headline Story with the class. Encourage children to think of creative ways to complete the story. You might ask questions to help children come up with more varied responses.
Headline Story
Chris has a jar of marbles. Then he shares them all equally with himself and two friends. There are none left over.
Possible student responses
- If Chris has 12 marbles in the jar, each friend gets 4 marbles.
- If each one of them gets 2 marbles, then Chris starts with 6 marbles in the jar.
- Chris could not have had 7 marbles, 8 marbles, or 13 marbles because none of those can be shared evenly between three people with none left over.
