Read the Headline Story to children, and have them use the information in the story to solve the problem. Have children write mathematical sentences that fit.

Connor had some peanuts. He gave half to his mother. He gave 1 to his friend, and he ate the last 2.
Possible student responses
- If Connor started out with 6 peanuts, then he gave his mother 3 peanuts.
- If Connor gave his friend 1/6 of all the peanuts, then he ate 2/6 or 1/3 of the peanuts.
