Introduction
Share the Headline Story with the class and encourage the children to think creatively about the story and problems they might pose. With each Headline Story, you might help children learn to give more varied responses by asking one new question explicitly.
Headline Story
Craig has toy cars that are red, blue, and green. His sister took 4 cars to play, but she only wanted two colors.
Possible student responses
- She took 2 blue and 2 green.
- If Craig had 15 to start, how many did he have left? (11)
- We can make a list of possibilities: 3 red, 1 blue; 3 red, 1 green; 3 blue, 1 red; 3 blue, 1 green; 3 green, 1 red; 3 green, 1 blue; 2 red, 2 blue; 2 red, 2 green; 2 blue, 2 green.
