Introduction
The goal of Headline Stories is for children to translate situations and information into problems that can be answered mathematically. Discuss with children what information they know and what information is missing from the story,
Headline Story
There are 11 children at the park. 7 of them are girls.
Possible student responses
- How many boys are at the park? There are 4 boys.
- There are more girls than boys at the park.
- If 3 more boys arrive, there would be the same number of boys and girls.
- You cannot make two equal-sized teams with 11 children, because 11 is not even.
- Children might respond with any members of the fact family for 7 + 4 = 11, 4 + 7 = 11, 11 – 7 = 4, 11 – 4 = 7
