Introduction
The goal of Headline Stories is for children to learn to translate situations and information into problems that can be answered mathematically. What information are they given? What information is missing? Encourage children to think mathematically to complete the problem.
Headline Story
At the bake sale, a cup of lemonade costs 10¢ and a cookie costs 15¢. What can you buy to spend exactly 15¢? 20¢? 25¢? 30¢?
Possible student responses
- 15¢ has to be one cookie.
- 20¢ has to be 2 cups of lemonade.
- 25¢ has to be a cookie and a cup of lemonade.
- When you get to 30¢, you might have bought 2 cookies or 3 cups of lemonade.
- If you spend an amount that ends in a 5, you have to buy at least one cookie.
