Introduction
Share the Headline Story with the class and encourage children to think creatively about the story. If children need help coming up with ideas , pose questions such as, “How many crackers does Walter have? How many crackers do they have in all?”
Headline Story
Martin has 18 crackers. Walter has twice as many crackers as Martin.
Possible student responses
- Walter has 36 crackers.
- Together, they have 54 crackers.
- Martin has half as many crackers as Walter.
- If Walter gives Martin 9 crackers, they would both have the same amount.
