Introduction
Read the Headline Story to children. Encourage them to visualize and describe the possible figures. You may wish to give children square paper to fold or cut in order to act out the problem.
Headline Story
Alyssa has a square piece of paper. She cuts it in half and then in half again.
Possible student responses
- Alyssa’s new piece of paper is smaller than her original piece of paper.
- The shape of Alyssa’s cut piece of paper could be a square, a rectangle, or a triangle.
- If Alyssa cuts the paper in half again she would have a rectangle or a triangle, unless she cut it in curvy lines.
