Introduction
The Headline Story is deliberately broad in order to allow children to respond at varying levels. You may want to ask questions such as, “What is the value of the coin?” or “If Armand has more than 5¢, what coin could he have?”
Headline Story
Armand has 1 coin.
Possible student responses
- Armand might have a penny, or a dime, or a nickel.
- If Armand has 10¢, he has one dime.
- If Armand has less than 10¢, he has either a penny or a nickel.
- Armand has 1¢, 5¢, or 10¢.
- (Some children may know of other coins and suggest that Armand has a quarter, a half dollar, or a dollar coin. A few children might suggest that Armand has a coin from a different country.)
