Introduction
The Headline Story encourages children think logically and allows children to respond at varying levels. You may want to ask questions such as, “Does Ellie or Melissa have more carrots? Who has the most (or fewest) carrots?”
Headline Story
Gina has 10 more carrots than Ellie, but 7 fewer than Melissa.
Possible student responses
- Melissa has more carrots than Gina and Ellie.
- Ellie has the least number of carrots.
- If Gina has 12 carrots, then Ellie only has 2 carrots, so 12 – 10 = 2.
- If Melissa has 27 carrots, then Gina has 20 carrots, so 27 – 7 = 20.
- If Melissa has 27 carrots, then Ellie has 10 carrots, so 27 – 7 = 10.
- Ellie has 17 fewer carrots than Melissa.
- If Ellie has 5 carrots, then Gina has 15 and Melissa has 22.
