Share the Headline Story with the class. Encourage children to find different ways to complete the story. If children need help getting started, you might ask for some specific examples of what one child might have brought. Have children check to see if that number fits the story (it must be less than 10). When they find numbers for the two other children, they must check for three things: the number is less than 10 for each child, all three numbers must be different, and the total must be less than 20. You can also order the number of coins each child brought from greatest to least or least to greatest.
Three children each bought a different number of coins to class. Each child brought fewer than 10 coins. The total number of coins was less than 20.
