Share the Headline story with the class. Encourage children to try out some possible solutions and check to make sure that their solutions fit the constraints of the problem. Have children suggest other conclusions to the story.
Headline Story
Four children each brought some coins to class. Altogether, they brought 11 coins. Could each child have brought a different number of coins?
Possible student responses
- Yes, each child could bring a different number of coins since 1 + 2 + 3 + 5 = 11.
- Two children could bring the same number of coins since 1 + 1 + 5 + 4 = 11.
- Three children could bring the same number of coins since 2 + 2 + 2 + 5 = 11, but all four children could not bring the same number of coins.
