Introduction

Share the Headline Story with the class. Encourage students to create problems that can be solved using information from the story.

Headline Story

Sue’s pencil is half as long as Kendra’s.

Possible student responses

Kendra’s pencil is twice as long as Sue’s.
If Kendra’s pencil is 10 inches long, then Sue’s is 5 inches long.
How long is a real pencil? Mine is 6 $\frac{1}{2}$ inches long; If Sue’s pencil is 6 $\frac{1}{2}$ inches long, Kendra’s pencil is 13 inches long. That’s way too long for a pencil; Maybe Kendra’s pencil is 6 $\frac{1}{2}$ inches long. And then Sue’s pencil is 3 $\frac{1}{4}$ inches long.
