Headline Story
A figure drawn on a graph paper using the grid lines only has a perimeter of 20 cm. What could the area of the figure be?
Possible student responses
- If it is a square, it would measure 5 cm by 5 cm and have an area of 25 square cm.
- It might be a rectangle 4 cm by 6 cm (area 24 square cm), or 3 cm by 7 cm (area 21 square cm), or 2 cm by 8 cm (area 16 square cm), or 1 cm by 9 cm (area 9 square cm).
- 25 square cm is the largest possible area for such a figure, and 9 square cm is the smallest possible area.
- It might not even be a rectangle.
